Starbucks Contributes to Planned Parenthood

I continue to NOT BUY FROM STARBUCKS.
Many people do not know that they contribute to Planned Parenthood.

Once I learned that they contribute to Planned Parenthood I experienced a rude but quick awakening to the fact that anything purchased from them was a donation in my name to help fund abortions. I cannot stomach that.

It may not be possible to know or avoid all companies that contribute to unethical organizations . . . but this is one example of a choice that is truly in my control.

Recently a student of mine challenged me on this info. The student came to me with the message that her parents did not believe the information I gave to the class.

I searched my sources to triple check that my info was up to date. I found only one (relatively unreliable) source that stated Starbucks no longer contributed to Planned Parenthood. Starbucks is still listed as a contributor at the Planned Parenthood website.

Here is the only source that I found stating Starbucks no longer contributed to PP. It is a response to a reader question over at EWTN.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I just read an article in the All website written by Nicole
Flusche titled "My Pro-life Barista." Has Starbucks stopped their involvement with planned parenthood? Please let me know what current news you have about Starbucks as soon as possible.

Dear Connie
Starbucks does not support Planned Parenthood any longer. This is according to *Life Decisions International corporate supporters of Planned Parenthood update.

Please note that

  1. Nicole Flusche's blog post talks about an experience with ONE Starbucks barista. As my friend Policraticus says, "I have a friend from Steubenville who is a barista who is very pro-life, very Catholic...that doesn't change the corporate decisions on 'charitable' contributions. Policraticus adds these points -
  2. "Planned Parenthood still lists Starbucks as a gift matching donator, and until Planned Parenthood or Starbucks says otherwise, I'd say we have to believe that the financial connection remains.
  3. EWTN forums are notoriously poor when it comes to social, economic and political information. The fact that Judie Brown does not even provide a link or article leads me to treat her claims as rather dubious."
* I tried to check out the Life Decisions International list but you had to purchase it! I did not do that. On the other hand, you can go straight to the PP site and check out their list.

Thanks for the info. I don't do Starbucks but that list was enlightening....
But remember, a boycott only works if the company KNOWS you are boycotting and WHY. Write or call and tell them why they have just lost your business!

Barb, Thank you!! You are exactly on target and I can't believe I didn't mention that.,
"a boycott only works if the company KNOWS you are boycotting and WHY. Write or call and tell them why they have just lost your business!"
Unfortunately many people just do not care. I am saving a post -- till I cool down a bit -- about just that. I'll edit it and it'll be posted in a couple of days.

Thanks for the info. Every time I hear about Starbucks earnings being less than expected I have to wonder if we are accomplishing something here.

Oh my goodness... I had no idea! I talked with my husband, and we're going to buy that list. I would hate to help that evil corporation in any way I can possibly avoid!

Sara and Lerin,
Thanks for your comments. It sure is nice to know there are others who are like minded.
Lerin, glad to hear you are checking out the list. Would you let us know what you learn?
I am amazed that some peers of mine have this "Don't believe it or Don't want to know" attitude. Starbucks is listed at the PP website boldly and clearly as matching fund contributors.

I got my list just this morning, and shockingly... Starbucks is NOT listed! However, the Disney corporation, Johnson & Johnson, and Sonic are. :( Those are some of our favorite brands. No more... I don't want ANY of my money going to ANY company who supports Planned Parenthood in any way.

I still take issue with Starbucks for many reasons, though. Since I read this post a couple of months ago, I've totally gone cold trukey on the Starbucks habit. It has saved us money and I've found that I really enjoy Bigelow's Vanilla Chai for $2 per 20 bags just as much. I've done Google searches on Starbucks and was really disappointed by some of the things I'd read.

Life Decisions International did issue a statement to this effect, however, that statement dates back to March of 2000. Eight years have passed since then. One could hardly rely on that statement to be accurate today. In fact the PP website itself acknowledges Starbucks particiaption in the Employee matching contributions program. For the record, here is a link to a PDF of that statement...

Relative to the LDI list, it is important to recognize that the list is only a partial list. LDI seeks to make people aware of the most agregious violators.

Dear Kathy,
It is quite obvious you are FOR Planned Parenthood and abortion. You can "continue to donate even more money to this organization as long as you like" because (right now) abortion is legal.
Legal does not make something morally acceptable -- think back to when slavery was legal.

I find your statement about the government and The Church to be confusing.
You say, "The government and the Catholic church and its hierarchy should not be making decisions for women."

Let's start with the government.
One of the most important roles of the government is to protect our lives - that includes the unborn.

Now let's talk about "choice".
Women (and men) have plenty of "choice" in matters of pregnancy.
You say, " Women are intelligent human beings that can make their own decisions."
I agree. I guess I give people a lot more credit for basic intelligence. The choice comes before the pregnancy. After conception there is another life at stake and that changes everything.
When a child is born, helpless and totally dependent on its mother for life -- she cannot kill it if she does not want it.
To me (and millions of other pro-life people) there is no difference. Human life is human life.

Now let's talk about your view of The Church in this matter:
The Church does not "make my decision" for me. But I sure am glad The Church agrees. The Church upholds that principal of the sanctity of life.

Thank you for your comment. Unfortunately I do not find it unusual for a pro-choice person to be so misinformed and rude.

Planned Parenthood is the nation’s largest abortion provider and 96% of its services for pregnant women are abortions.
The documentation is in the 2010 fact sheet from their own website. Abortion services accounted for 96% of the services provided to pregnant women.

It is a myth that Planned Parenthood is the only place for low income women. You stated: "Planned Parenthood offers health care for low income women. Where else are they going to go for Pap tests, Breast cancer screening, birth control information, and other female issues?"

Planned Parenthood would love you to believe they are the only place to access free or low cost health care, but that is absolutely false. Nearly 7,000 Federally Qualified Health Centers in the U.S. provide comprehensive health care for men, women and children, instead of the narrow spectrum of care offered by Planned Parenthood. These Federally Qualified Health Centers (FQHCs) are scattered throughout the country and these facilities provide even more free assistance to underprivileged people.

FQHCs are able to provide annual exams, STD testing, all birth control methods and everything else Planned Parenthood provides – except abortion. They also provide many services Planned Parenthood does not offer including vaccinations, x-rays, vision, dental, prenatal care and primary care to all members of the family.
Planned Parenthood only has 800 clinics nationally and may turn people away if they can’t pay.
Planned Parenthood does not provide mammograms. Even though they tout the ability to provide mammograms, there is no Planned Parenthood clinic that actually provides them in-house.

Planned Parenthood has proven itself to be the best friend and perfect partner for a sex trafficker and statutory rapist – all under the code of confidentiality, no questions asked, and abortion is a good solution in any situation. Live Action undercover investigations consistently show Planned Parenthood at all levels endangering the health and safety of young girls.

The numbers Planned Parenthood provides in its reports are skewed and don’t give a full picture of the services Planned Parenthood is actually providing.

Abby Johnson, former Planned Parenthood Director, recently commented on the way Planned Parenthood reports on its numbers to ensure that the public will not know the truth of their business:

“And while Planned Parenthood says abortions make up just 3 percent of its services, I found they used an sleight of hand, unbundling family planning services so each patient shows anywhere from five to 20 “visits” per appointment (12 packs of birth control would show up as 12 individual visits).

It does the opposite for abortion visits, bundling them together so each appointment shows as one visit. This skews the numbers. You have an overwhelming number of “visits” for family planning compared to abortion, even though you may have seen the same number of patients.”

Planned Parenthood, the nation’s largest abortion provider, has been caught time and again breaking federal and state laws by protecting racists, rapists, and sex traffickers of minors.

Preach it! The hedonistic relativity giving way to the significant laws and "rights" of this generation is repulsive!
