Gospel reading: Mark 2:23-28
I love the last part of this Gospel reading: "Then Jesus said to them, 'The sabbath was made for man, not man for the sabbath.' "
God created the world in 6 days and then rested on the 7th. He didn't rest because He was tired, He didn't rest because He needed to. He did it as an example for us. He knew that we would need the sabbath to rest in Him & worship Him in order to be completely happy. Isn't it as simple as that? WHY do we squirm and fuss and try to bend God's rules? We either trust Him or we don't. The rest is just details -- many of those details are petty.
In his wonderful reflections on the daily readings journal Father Daniel Mahan says,
We call someone"pharisaical" if that person is overly concerned with petty things. Such a person is usually so focused on minor transgressions that he fails to see the bigger picture, and misses seeing redeeming qualities about the one who is being criticized.
May God guard us against such pettiness!
May we spend our time on the things in life that really matter and not waste our time worrying about unimportant things. God gives us the gift of time, 24 precious hours in every day. May we be good stewards of that important gift. God entrusted us with so many gifts. Do we trust Him enough to obey Him?
