Do Catholics Worship Mary?

—ANSWER

No!
Worship— in the Divine senses of the term—is given by Catholics to God alone and never to Mary nor to any other creature in Heaven or on earth.

We Catholics believe that among all the saints in Heaven, Mary is first in standing, in influence, in intercessory power.

Therefore, Catholics pray to Mary to pray for them, while they pray themselves to her Divine Son, Jesus, the one Supreme Mediator for the redemption of all mankind.

Someone is still going to argue that you don't need to pray to anyone but God. They just don't get it and I just don't want to get into with them.

This one apologetic is probably one of the most misunderstood parts of our faith.

I just try (with meekness - which can be hard for me sometimes) to remind them that pray does not mean worship . . . it means "ask". Then I ask them if they have ever asked a friend to pray with them or for them . . . have they ever prayed for someone else . . .
THAT's what we do. :-) Sometimes they get it and sometimes they don't.

Peggy...I love this and I love what you just said about asking a friend to pray for you. That's perfect! I remember a blog friend wondering why Catholics have pictures of saints around....I have pictures of my friends...that's such a good, succinct answer!
