Longing and Desire - We Were Made For Another World

Sunday's first reading was Ex 20:1-17 or 20:1-3, 7-8, 12-17 The 10 Commandments
Exodus 20:8 tells us, "Remember the sabbath day and keep it holy."
I have been thinking about that and it lead me to remembering that God created man on the 6th day (the same day He created the beasts) but! He created man for the 7th day!
On that day, when we go to Mass, it fulfills a need inside of us. It is right and just and commanded that we go to Mass . . . . . . but isn't it so amazing that our God knew we needed this!
At Mass the veil between Heaven and Earth lifts and we praise God together. We celebrate, we participate.
A glimpse of heaven . . . . . He knew we would long for Him. Many people try to fill that desire for God with other things. It always disappoints.

One of the main themes of a wonderful new blog I found is the subject of longing and desire.
The blog is Archdiocese of Washington and here is a post I found enlightening and so true.

"You and I desire infinitely, without limit, and this points to and proves that God exists and is calling us. The way C.S. Lewis put it is this If I find in myself a desire which no experience in this world can satisfy, the most probable explanation is that I was made for another world.
Along these lines, I would like to call to your attention a talk by Dr. Peter Kreeft on the Argument from Desire. A written Summary of the talk is available HERE . There is an mp3 audio of the talk along with questions and answers from the audience HERE Be aware that the talk is a scholarly one to a largely academic audience. But the Fundamental point of his talk is clear enough:
  1. Every natural, innate desire in us corresponds to some real object in the world that can satisfy that desire.
  2. But there exists in us one desire which nothing in time, nothing on earth, no creature can satisfy. A mysterious longing!
  3. Therefore there must exist something more than time, earth and creatures, which can satisfy this desire.
  4. This something is what people call “God” and “life with God forever.”
LONGING FOR SOMETHING? MAYBE IT’S GOD!
Among the apologists, philosophers and theologians of our day, Dr. Peter Kreeft is among the greatest. One of my favorite books of his is Everything You Ever Wanted to Know About Heaven But Never Dreamed of Asking . Other talks by Dr. Peter Kreeft are available HERE"

Soutenus, what a wonderful post and links. Thank you also for breaking down Peter Kreeft's argument. How true that is that we long for something more than this life can provide. And of course we know this something is God, but many don't. To spread this message is so vital to our world, where so many people are trying to fulfill this deep desire with earthly things and coming up often emptier than when they started. Thank you for posting this information!

Hello!
I have a rather long email for you, answering your questions and I can't find your email address. I didn't want to put it here and have something off the topic. Send me a note and I will send it to you.
