Healing

"When Christ at Capernaum healed a paralyzed man, he said, “Your sins are forgiven.” He was not claiming that sins were the problem—certainly not the only problem—although sin can indeed paralyze us. He was telling us that spiritual cure is as crucial as physical cure.

Reports of healing dazzle us. They can bolster our faith. But forgiveness is just as resplendent. Isaiah knew that to be forgiven was as liberating as a rescue from the desert, as life-giving as water in a wasteland. For Jesus, the forgiveness he gave dissolved paralysis. He knew that, in more ways than one, we long to be whole again."
John Kavanaugh, S. J. of Saint Louis University
