Beware of 'Good Causes' That Also Support Abortion

Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation Among Those That Funded Planned Parenthood
An article by Thomas A. Szyszkiewicz originally written on 1/9/2005 (H/T: Roman Catholic Blog)

"When Eve Silver joined an advisory board for the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation, she thought she was working with an organization that supported life. Komen supports breast cancer research and sponsors annual Race for the Cure events around the country.

But what Silver didn't know until just recently is that Komen also financially supports Planned Parenthood. In fact, in 2003 the foundation gave $450,000 to the group. The foundation is just one of many national organizations Catholics may contribute to that support pro-abortion causes.

When Silver found out, the now former member of the foundation's National Hispanic/Latin Advisory Council went to the foundation's headquarters in Dallas and met with officials.

"I said, 'I'm on your advisory council, and I advise you to stop it,'" she said. "They were just beginning a re-evaluation of where they were headed, and I asked them, 'Would you re-evaluate this relationship with Planned Parenthood?' They said no."

As a strong pro-life advocate, that left Silver with only one option -- leaving the board. "It was difficult to end a relationship with people I had a good working relationship with," she said. "But women of color are targets of Planned Parenthood, and I don't like these two organizations being linked."

Conflict of interest
What Silver also found out is that Komen's founder, Nancy Brinker, is on the advisory board of Planned Parenthood in Dallas, and, after the $450,000 donation, Planned Parenthood built a new $5 million clinic in Dallas, something Silver called "a very clear conflict of interest."
