I find this very hopeful (numbering is my emphasis) - The Vatican spokesman, Father Federico Lombardi, said the church was "taking the correct approach by
1) reaching out to victims
2) strengthening its own procedures against offenders
3) encouraging cooperation with civil authorities and
4) improving the screening of priesthood candidates"
Quite honestly, what more can be done? I am not being sarcastic I am really asking what others think.
And this is worth repeating . . . . . I know this should be common knowledge (and is, by no means, an excuse for the abuse that has occurred) but MANY people do not realize that
"the church (is) dealing with a problem shared by many institutions . . . . recent document on mistreatment of children in the United States reported that in 2008, there were more than 62,000 perpetrators of sexual abuse against minors; of that number the proportion of Catholic priests was so small as not to be taken into consideration as a group."SOURCE: http://www.catholicnews.com/data/stories/cns/1001484.htm
